White Deer Plain (2012)

Other name: Bái Lù Yuán, 白鹿原

Description:

White Deer Plain transports audiences to the dramatic twilight of imperial China, a time of immense political and social upheaval. The film is set in the eponymous White Deer Village in Shaanxi Province, where the prominent Bai and Lu families, alongside their sons, have long lived in peaceful coexistence. However, as the nation descends into turmoil, this harmony shatters, sparking a fierce struggle for land ownership between the two powerful clans. A young woman, a newcomer to the village, soon becomes inextricably caught in the escalating conflict, finding herself precariously positioned between the warring camps. Director Wang Quan An brilliantly employs the intertwined saga of these families as a profound metaphor for the arduous fate of the Chinese people, charting their journey from internal warlord battles, through the devastating Japanese invasion, and ultimately into the brutal civil war that emerged in the wake of the Second World War.
