Tonari no Masala introduces Sawaki Tatsuya, a fledgling photographer whose return to his hometown, Fukuoka, to care for his sick father is met with rejection. Feeling adrift, Tatsuya soon crosses paths with Jinbo and Yui, individuals dedicated to mediating between Japan and Nepal. Through these new connections, Tatsuya finds himself deeply integrated into the local Nepalese community. This transformative experience not only expands his personal world and understanding of diverse cultures but also unveils the significant challenges and realities faced by foreigners residing in Japan. Filmed in an actual town with a large Nepalese population and starring authentic Nepalese actors, the title "Masala" metaphorically represents the rich and varied tapestry of society Tatsuya encounters.
