Set against the tumultuous backdrop of old Shanghai, from the Cultural Revolution through the era of reform and opening, this film follows a humble family navigating profound societal changes. Du Xin Sheng and Yu Pei Pei, two young classmates, share a deep bond. However, their world is upended when Pei Pei’s grandmother, a revered conservatory professor, is branded a reactionary by the Red Guards. To safeguard a precious Italian cello from confiscation, Xin Sheng and his father, who maintains the bell tower at the Bund, ingeniously conceal it within. As the city’s youth are dispatched to the countryside, the Du family's eldest daughter, Xin Fang, bravely chooses to join them. But her journey takes an unexpected turn when, unmarried, she becomes pregnant, plunging the family into a formidable crisis that tests their resilience and values amidst a rapidly evolving nation.
