"The Runner" delves into the profound quest for life's meaning, set against the backdrop of long-distance running. Online media editor Ho Ka Yan is tasked with investigating an athletics club for negative stories. There, she meets running coach Yuen Lik, who, burdened by past regrets, avoids forming personal connections. Despite his guarded nature, their interactions gradually draw them closer.

Adding to the club's dynamic, Kwok Pui Yee joins for her own undisclosed reasons, while her father steps in as a sponsor. Yuen Lik is also responsible for the son of his good friend, Lai Shun Fan, whose past surprisingly intertwines with Ka Yan's. As Shun Fan faces a serious illness and threatens to give up, Yuen Lik becomes determined to support his friend's recovery. This challenge forces Yuen Lik to reexamine his own life, ultimately inspiring him to return to the running track and embrace his passion once more.
