The Rootless is a powerful drama chronicling the arduous journey of a young man seeking survival and freedom. The story begins on March 10, 2001, when 25-year-old Lê Van Thành leaves his family in Vietnam, arriving in Taiwan to work as a migrant fisher. He secures a position onboard a Taiwanese coastal fishing boat, hoping for a fresh start. However, Lê's hopes are shattered as he faces relentless discrimination and severe abuse from the boat's Taiwanese captain and engineer. The harsh conditions and continuous mistreatment push him to the brink. One day, during a brutal physical attack by his captain, Lê reaches his breaking point and retaliates. Now free but without legal status, Lê embarks on a perilous new chapter, attempting to forge a life as an undocumented migrant worker in Taiwan, far from everything he once knew.
