The Next Generation -PATLABOR- transports viewers to Tokyo, Japan, in the year 2013. A prolonged and severe economic depression has rendered Labors, the powerful construction robots, largely obsolete, leading to their widespread dismissal. Consequently, Patlabor Division 1, once instrumental in deploying specialized police robots to combat crime, has been completely disbanded.

However, a glimmer of the past remains with Division 2, designated the "next generation" unit. This resourceful squad manages to avoid disbandment by operating under the guise of an experience-holding unit for Labor operations. Despite their crucial role in maintaining order with their police robots, Division 2 faces immense challenges. They constantly struggle to justify their continued existence and survive in a city that seems to be moving on from its robotic past, yet still occasionally demands their unique brand of justice.
