The Contract Marriage tells the story of Ms. Hua, a hardworking migrant in Beijing who owns a hotpot restaurant and desperately needs a local permanent residence for her son to attend school. A marriage brokerage connects her with Mr. Liu, a single local fitness instructor who can help achieve this crucial Beijing hukou. Mr. Liu, however, also needs financial assistance to restart his own business. They agree to a contract marriage, a mutually beneficial arrangement.

Their plan faces an unexpected hurdle when they learn Mr. Liu must own property for the permanent residence. Growing closer, Ms. Hua transfers her house ownership to him. Mr. Liu successfully restarts his business but soon finds himself deeply in debt, prompting him to seek a divorce to protect Ms. Hua from his troubles. Resilient, Ms. Hua decides to stand by him through the difficulties. Later, their son discovers the truth and refuses to let his mother sacrifice her happiness for him, leading to their divorce. On the day Mr. Liu repays Ms. Hua from his now-successful business, they decide to embark on a new life together, without any contract.
