Tantei Romance unfolds in early 20th century Japan, a tumultuous era plagued by vast income inequality, widespread disease, and rampant crime. The populace yearns for a hero to rise amidst the chaos. We meet Hirai Taro, a struggling writer deeply inspired by literary giants like Conan Doyle and Edgar Allan Poe. Despite his passion, newspapers and publishing houses consistently reject his detective novels, leaving him to toil in low-paying jobs and live in poverty. His only solace comes from Murayama Ryuko, his sole reader, with whom he exchanges heartfelt letters. A turning point arrives when he encounters the seasoned Private Detective Shirai Saburo. Together, they embark on various private investigation cases, forming an unlikely partnership. This journey ultimately shapes Hirai Taro, leading him to achieve fame as the renowned detective novelist, Edogawa Rampo.
