Description:

The poignant film Sopyonje centers on the traditional Korean folk song known as pansori, a musical sublimation of the collective grief of SouthWest Korea. Set in the 1950s, a turbulent time when Korean culture faced heavy Japanese and Western influences, the narrative follows three itinerant pansori singers. The story unfolds through flashbacks as a man named Dongho roams the rural hinterlands. While ostensibly seeking rare herbal medicines for his sick son in Seoul, Dongho is actually searching for Songhwa, the woman he grew up with. As orphans, both Dongho and Songhwa were apprenticed to the strict pansori master Yubong, played by Kim Myunggon. Yubong relentlessly pressured the young disciples to sacrifice everything for their art. This classic movie captures the intense emotional struggle of preserving a beautiful, dying heritage against all odds. Sopyonje remains a masterpiece of cultural preservation, showcasing the heartbreaking sacrifices made in the name of artistic devotion.
