Sewing Sisters (2022)

Other name: 미싱타는 여자들, Misingtaneun Yeojadeul

Description:

"Sewing Sisters" vividly portrays the untold stories of young girls working at Pyeonghwa Market during the late 1960s and early 1970s. While their peers attended school, these 12-to-16-year-olds tirelessly operated sewing machines. Their lives took a turn through clandestine labor classes, where they learned about Jeon Tae Il and the crucial Labor Standards Act, sparking an awakening about workers' rights.

The film dramatically escalates on September 9, 1977, when a brave young woman confronts public authorities who shut down these essential classes, shouting "The second Jeon Tae Il is a woman," leading to her imprisonment. Decades later, now middle-aged, these resilient women reflect on their grueling past, the deep social contempt they endured, and their significant, yet often overlooked, contributions to the labor struggle. "Sewing Sisters" champions these unknown female fighters, rewriting the male-centered history of the Korean labor movement by celebrating their courage and sacrifice.
