The historical drama Segodon follows the extraordinary life of Saigo Takamori, the legendary hero of the Meiji Restoration. Born into a poor, low-ranking samurai family in the Satsuma domain, present-day Kagoshima Prefecture, Saigo rises from obscurity through his simple honesty. His genuine character catches the attention of Shimazu Nariakira, the charismatic feudal lord of Satsuma. Inspired by Nariakira's profound belief that loving the people is the key to strengthening the nation, Saigo undertakes a series of secret missions, eventually becoming a pivotal leader for Satsuma. Based on the novel Sego Don by Hayashi Mariko, this captivating series explores the mysterious life of a man who was twice exiled and thrice married, and of whom no portraits survive today. With exceptional bravery, Saigo successfully overthrows the Tokugawa Shogunate to accomplish the historic restoration. However, in a tragic turn of events, this great hero ultimately loses his life fighting against the very Meiji government he helped create, sealing his legacy in Japanese history.
