Set in the quiet, shuttered streets of Kofu city in Yamanashi, Japan, Saudade explores the gritty underbelly of a small town through the eyes of Takeru. A member of the local hiphop group Army Village, Takeru deals with a dysfunctional family ruined by bankruptcy and gambling. To survive, he takes up grueling 3D (dirty, dangerous, and demeaning) construction labor, where he encounters a diverse community of immigrant workers, including Japanese-Brazilians and Thais. Alongside his new co-workers Seiji and Hosaka, Takeru is introduced to the vibrant immigrant subculture, visiting a local ThaiPub where Seiji flirts with Miyao. However, as his friends embrace this world, Takeru feels increasingly alienated. This deep isolation turns into a growing hostility against the very immigrants who share his economic struggle. Saudade captures a raw, authentic look at modern Japan, embodying a bittersweet longing for a dream that remains forever out of reach.
