Sad Vacation follows Kenji, a young man scarred by his mother's abandonment and his father's suicide. He barely scrapes by, doing odd jobs and driving for a local bar. Despite his own hardships, Kenji selflessly cares for an imprisoned friend's sister, an illegal immigrant, and her child. His life takes an unexpected turn one night when he drives Mamiya, a compassionate dispatch company owner, and recognizes Mamiya's companion as Chiyoko, Kenji's long-lost mother. Mamiya, who helps ex-prisoners find work and reintegrate into society, tries to involve Kenji in his projects. This opportunity becomes Kenji's chance to confront his past and seek reconciliation with his mother.
