Recipes to Live By follows the captivating journey of Ding Yat San, a man blessed with a golden tongue capable of identifying flavors in one bite. Forbidden by his adoptive father Ding Yat from becoming a chef, Yat San sneaks into a Yangzhou cooking contest by asking Shek Yau to disguise as a man and compete in his place. His genius catches the attention of legendary chef Koi Siu Tin. Together, they create exquisite dishes and dominate the Golden Lotus Flower culinary awards. As they gain fame, they cross paths with wealthy food enthusiast Tung Ming Ming and talented female chef Dai Ng Yuen. However, a complex love triangle arises when Shek Yau rejects Yat San for Koi Siu Tin, prompting Yat San to strike out on his own. Tragedy strikes when Shek Yau frames him, causing him to lose his special tasting abilities. Ultimately, Yat San uncovers his true identity as the descendant of a legendary chef and vows to clear his father's legacy.
