In the gripping mystery film Proof of the Man, a young black man from Harlem, New York, named Joe Yamanaka, receives a large sum of money. After buying new clothes, he takes a flight to Tokyo, only to be found fatally stabbed to death in a hotel lift shortly after arriving. This tragedy occurs at the exact same time a fashion show is being held at the hotel by designer Kyoko Yasugi, played by Mariko Okada. Detective Munesue, played by Yusaku Matsuda, starts to investigate the baffling case, which eventually takes him to New York. There, he teams up with American detective Shuftan, played by George Kennedy. Together, the two detectives must piece together the clues to find out more about the dead man and solve this international murder mystery.
