Mukou no Hate plunges into 1985 Tokyo, where novelist Kohei Kimizuka is tragically found dead in an arson-murder. His childhood friend, Ritsuko Ikematsu, is swiftly arrested as the prime suspect. Prosecutor Tsutaguchi takes charge of the complex murder case, immediately embarking on a meticulous investigation. He begins by contacting various people who knew Ritsuko, aiming to understand her life. Tsutaguchi soon uncovers a past marked by misfortune and observes that the men who surrounded her hold strikingly different impressions of her character. His relentless pursuit of truth eventually leads him to a pivotal, decades-old case from 1955 in Tsugaru Aomori Prefecture, the very place where Ritsuko and Kohei grew up.
