In the fictional Tokyo suburb of Mahoro, Keisuke Tada works as a benriya, a general problem solver for hire. His routine life is disrupted one January day when his former classmate, Haruhiko Gyoten, appears unannounced. Back in their school days, Haruhiko was extremely quiet and rarely talked, but now he is incredibly talkative. Both men are over thirty years old, divorced, and drifting through life. Despite Keisuke's initial reluctance, the persistent Haruhiko manages to secure a place to stay, which quickly turns into a long-term arrangement. Eventually, Keisuke accepts Haruhiko as his assistant. Together, they tackle various local cases, getting involved with an assortment of people from different walks of life.
