In the heartfelt drama Letter from the Mountain, Takao, played by Akira Terao, and Michiko, played by Kanako Higuchi, decide to leave their busy lives in Tokyo behind. They relocate to a peaceful village that serves as the ancestral home of Takao, seeking a fresh start and a deeper connection to their roots. Upon their arrival, the couple visits a beautiful thatched cottage known as the amidado, a sacred memorial shrine dedicated to the deceased souls of the village. There, they meet Oume, played by Tanie Kitabayashi, a spry ninety-six-year-old attendant who watches over the shrine. Oume is a wise, beloved sage who shares her profound life observations in a popular local newsletter column. Assisting Oume is Sayuri, played by Manami Konishi, a mute and gentle young woman who is deeply devoted to the elderly woman. Together, these characters find solace, beauty, and quiet wisdom in the mountain landscape, exploring themes of life, death, and natural serenity.
