In the mystery drama Kuroi Jukai, Kasahara Sachiko lives a quiet life in Tokyo with her journalist sister, Nobuko. Everything changes when Nobuko is killed in a sudden accident. Strangely, the tragedy occurs in Nagano, a completely different place from Lake Towada in Tohoku, where Nobuko claimed she was going. Seeking answers, Sachiko teams up with Nobuko's colleague, Yoshii Ryoichi, to investigate the death. Sachiko takes over her sister's job at the newspaper, bringing her into contact with influential cultural figures like the pediatrician Nishiwaki Mitsutaro. The mystery deepens when colleague Machida Tomoe commits suicide, leaving a cryptic message hinting that a prominent figure is responsible for Nobuko's death. As Sachiko digs deeper, suspects begin dying under suspicious circumstances. Sachiko finds herself trapped in a dangerous web of lies and murder, wandering a metaphorical dark sea of trees with no escape.
