Description:

Set in 1841 during the late Edo period, Kakekomi follows the struggles of women seeking freedom in a feudal Japanese society where only men can easily get a divorce. Amidst the harsh Tempo reforms enforced by the Tokugawa Shogunate, Tokeiji temple in Kamakura serves as a unique sanctuary. Here, women can legally divorce their husbands after two years of servitude, provided they pass through the local screening inns. Jogo, fleeing an abusive and exploitative husband, and Ogin, a former courtesan who mysteriously left her wealthy lover, cross paths on their journey to the temple. At an inn run by Kashiwaya Genbei, they meet Nakamura Shinjiro, a writer and doctor-in-training who has escaped Edo. Along with his aunt Genbei and other allies, Shinjiro uses his wits to help Jogo and Ogin navigate the strict system. Together, they assist these resilient women in overcoming their painful pasts to start a hopeful new life.
