Himizu is a gripping drama set in the tsunami-hit areas of Japan around May 2011. The story centers on Sumida and Keiko, two fourteen-year-old school kids living a dystopian existence where their parents hope and encourage them to die. After fighting frequently with his father and being abandoned by his mother, Sumida shuts out the world. The situation escalates when he kills his father. Believing his life is ruined, Sumida decides to improve society by targeting and killing psychotic and violent characters. However, as he plunges deeper into darkness, lessons from Keiko, the Yakuza, and local friends make him realize that he has become sick himself. Sumida eventually attempts to break free from this destructive cycle of violence, though the movie leaves many of these profound issues without a complete resolution.
