Set in bustling Tokyo in 1935, this poignant drama centers on 10-year-old Yanagi Etsuko, a vibrant girl with a deep love for songs. Her father, Kantaro, a struggling lyricist, is adrift in a sea of grief, unable to move past the loss of his late wife and squandering his days. Witnessing her father's despair, Etsuko takes it upon herself to find him a new partner and, crucially, a new mother for herself.

Her first attempt involves teacher Muraoka Masako, but the plan doesn't quite succeed. Undeterred, Etsuko's attention soon turns to Ikebe Kyoko, a charming salesgirl she encounters at a department store. Etsuko is deeply touched by Kyoko's genuine simplicity and quickly grows fond of her, envisioning her as the perfect maternal figure. However, a new challenge arises when Kantaro's elder sister, Tsuruyo, arranges an introduction with the remarkably beautiful Kusakabe Kaoru, the daughter of a wealthy bank owner. This heartfelt story navigates a child's determined quest for love and family happiness amidst complex adult relationships.
