Set in the industrial and rapidly developing Chinese city of Chongqing, home to 40 million people, the movie Chongqing follows Xuie, a young woman struggling through an impoverished life. Burdened by a father who is far from helpful, Xuie works hard as a Mandarin teacher for foreigners. Interestingly, she chooses to speak only standard Mandarin rather than her native Chongqing dialect. Her fragile world is upended when her father is arrested for prostitution. Summoned to the police station, Xuie meets a policeman who instantly captivates her mind. Amidst the busy, crowded streets of this massive industrial city, Xuie desperately dreams of escaping her painful and hopeless existence. This gripping drama explores themes of isolation and desire in modern China.
