"Chikaemon" introduces Monzaemon Chikamatsu, a middle-aged dramatist once celebrated for his jōruri puppet theater. Now, Chikamatsu is mired in a deep slump, both professionally and personally. His creative well has run dry, his wife has left him, and his mother's patience has worn thin, utterly fed up with his relentless drinking. His days are a monotonous blur of despair and alcohol, offering no escape from his self-inflicted prison.

However, destiny intervenes. Chikamatsu's stagnant life takes an unexpected turn when he encounters Mankichi Munetaka Aoki, a shrewd gambler with a mysterious aura. This unlikely meeting proves to be the pivotal moment. As their lives intertwine, Mankichi ignites a spark within the desolate dramatist, gradually pulling him from his abyss of self-pity and addiction. Through this unusual companionship, Monzaemon Chikamatsu's long-stagnant life tentatively begins its slow, profound journey of transformation.
