Set between the Meiji and Taisho periods, the fantasy film Bugmaster follows Yoki, a young boy gifted with the rare ability to see Mushi, strange supernatural creatures invisible to ordinary humans. After a devastating landslide kills his mother, Yoki is rescued by Nui, a skilled Mushishi woman who studies these mysterious entities. Years later, Yoki has grown into Ginko, a traveling Mushishi with no memory of his past, marked by snow-white hair and a missing eye. Ginko eventually arrives at the home of Tanyu, a young woman who records Mushi stories onto scrolls. Tanyu has fallen dangerously ill after hearing a story from a blind Mushishi about a powerful Mushi called Tokoyami and an eyeless fish named Ginko. While reading Tanyu's scrolls to find a cure, Ginko uncovers a strangely familiar tale of a boy named Yoki who survived a landslide, setting him on a path to unlock the truth behind his own forgotten identity.
