April Story is a sweet Japanese drama directed by Shunji Iwai, following his acclaimed films Love Letter and Swallowtail Butterfly. The movie centers on Uzuki Nireno, played by Takako Matsu, who leaves her snowy, rural home in Hokkaido to start college in Western Tokyo. Transitioning to the bustling big city is not easy for her. After a botched self-introduction in class and an awkward incident in a movie theater, Uzuki gradually begins to feel at home as she explores her new neighborhood. She soon befriends the tough-talking Saeko Rumi, who invites her to join the school fishing club. Although she practices casting in a parking lot under the watchful eyes of attentive upperclassmen, Uzuki has another motivation. Her heart belongs to her high school crush, Seiichi Tanabe, who currently works at a local bookstore. This charming story follows Uzuki as she tries to summon the courage to say hello.
