A Far Shore immerses viewers in the unadorned reality of impoverished life on Okinawa, a Japanese island still bearing the scars of a bloody battle. We meet 17-year-old Aoi, relentlessly fighting to keep her small family afloat. She works as a nightclub hostess, struggling to earn enough for rent and to provide for her little boy. Her challenges are intensified by her lazy husband, Masaya, who doesn't hesitate to become verbally and physically abusive, especially after losing his job. This young family is caught in a debilitating social mire, a trap set by crushing poverty and the imprudence of youth. The film intimately asks how dark reality must become before it completely stifles the filtering rays of hope, presenting a powerful, less glitzy portrait of Japan and revealing how social inequality impacts all corners of the globe.
