Based on Nagashima Yus Akutagawa Prize-winning novel, A Dog In The Sidecar is a touching coming-of-age movie. The story revolves around Kaoru Matsumoto Kana, a normal girl living a chaotic life with her annoying brother Taniyama Takeru, her harried mom Suzuki Sawa Loft, and her languid dad Furuta Arata Hana. Her world changes completely when her mother suddenly ups and leaves. Soon after, her dad’s new girlfriend, Yoko Takeuchi Yuko, strolls into their lives. Initially, Kaoru does not know what to make of Yoko, who is brash, forward, good-humored, and sometimes downright uncouth. However, as the summer passes day by day, a unique friendship forms between them. Yoko opens Kaoru’s eyes to an exciting new world, helping her see life from a different perspective. But as their bond grows stronger, reality begins to catch up with them. A Dog In The Sidecar beautifully captures the bittersweet essence of growing up and the unexpected connections that shape our lives.
