Description:

Set in the materialistic world of 1990s Taipei, A Confucian Confusion is a panoramic satire directed by Yang that captures a city choked by smog and global corporate neon signs. Drawing comparisons to a Taiwanese Woody Allen movie, the film uses sharp wit to observe the self-absorption of a group of twentysomething urbanites. The story revolves around culture company impresario Molly Ni Shujun and her wealthy fiancée who fears she is cheating on him. Adding to the social chaos are Molly’s talk-show host sister and her sister’s estranged husband. This husband, a novelist, writes a book about a reincarnated Confucius returning in horror to a modern society supposedly built on his very teachings. Through this web of relationships, Yang searches for the lost soul of a rapidly changing country. This brilliant satirical comedy offers a funny yet poignant look at modern urban life and cultural identity.
